As I Ponder'd in Silence
As I ponder'd in silence, / Returning upon my poems, considering, lingering long,
Approaching, nearing, curious,
Thou dim, uncertain spectre--bringest thou life or death?
Strength, weakness, blindness, more paralysis and heavier?
Or placid skies and sun? Wilt stir the waters yet?
Or haply cut me short for good? Or leave me here as now,
Dull, parrot-like and old, with crack'd voice harping, screeching?
As I ponder'd in silence, / Returning upon my poems, considering, lingering long,
I dream'd in a dream I saw a city invincible to the attacks of the / whole of the rest of the earth,
Eternal I rise impalpable out of the land and the bottomless sea, / Upward to heaven, whence, vaguely form'd, altogether changed, and
Are you the new person drawn toward me? / To begin with take warning, I am surely far different from what you suppose;
